(More customer reviews)I used it, and it works better than anything else.The concentrated 2% tar is better than the typical 1% tar, but, I don't think it's necessarily worth the difference, unless you have a real bad case.The 1% T-Gel is comparable to a generic drugstore brand I've used; the main difference is that the Neutrogena shampoo base seems to be easier on the hair than the generic.Again, it depends on your hair, its length, and thickness.

My main worry with coal tar shampoos is the health risk of coal tar.It's a VOC, and generally, putting VOCs on the skin isn't doing your liver any favors.Some people also say it's carcinogenic.Consequently, I've cut back on using this shampoo, using it for special occasions.

(More customer reviews)I have been using T-Gel for years - since before it was owned by Neutrogena.It is the only thing that works on my scalp.I tend to alternate it with another shampoo.I used to use it with the T-Gel conditioner, but now I get the Neutrogena Triple Moisture conditioner.

This price is much better than I can find anywhere else.Usually the 8.5 oz bottles are close to $15 each in the grocery store or drug store.

(More customer reviews)I have been using this product for 20 years.I have found no other that will work as well for dandruff causes by oily pores.Nizoral works better when I have dry skin, so, I keep both on hand.

For best results you must use as directed (wait time before rinse).Also, I recommend using an inexpensive shampoo first then you can apply a smaller amount of the Sebulex (needs less to lather after wash)

(More customer reviews)I've had bad dandruff for years. I mean, bad to the point where it's in my car, all over my home, my workdesk, my laptop. It's kind of disgusting, and looks pretty bad when I wore dark clothes. I could literally stand still, and shed. Yuck... Let's not even talk about the itch. All day, to the point where I had sore spots on my head.

I've tried pretty much everything. Dermarest, Nizoral, Selenium, and Zinc preparations - everything from over-the-counter varieties to items given to me by dermatologists, who were always "amazed that it didn't work."

Well, one day, I noticed a local grocery was closing out some generic low-percentage coal tar shampoos. Some of the 0.5% stuff, which I remember as being one of the older remedies that the folks had talked about. I decided to give it a try, since the bottles were going for a buck. Nothing really to lose. Well, within two weeks, I noticed a marked difference in the amount of dandruff I was shedding, and most of the itch and redness on my scalp had gone.

I investigated, found that it was near impossible to get the stronger stuff anymore due to some goofball's lawsuit, but that it was indeed still available, right here. The lawsuit was related to the stuff being considered a carcinogen in California. Yeah, kids, it's made from tar. Don't drink it.

After about a month and a half of using this stuff (about 7/8th of one bottle) I'm happy to say my dandruff is, as far as I am concerned, 100% gone. No more shedding, no more blowing crap out of my laptop, and no more cleaning the car every other day. I'm simply amazed. My scalp doesn't itch. I can wear dark shirts now. This stuff even cleared up some redness on my neck that I've had with the dandruff (and the doctors think was related.) I'm going to try and start cutting back on use, down to maybe every 3-5 days and see what happens. I don't think I can stop using it, but I can cut back.

So, in short, this stuff is amazing, is worth every penny, and will last you for probably 5-6 months if you use it sparingly. If you have severe dandruff, I highly recommend you read about how this stuff works, the minor side effects it can have, and get some. It works!

If you have very dry hair, get a good conditioner to pair with it.

Pros:
Highest coal-tar percentage from a retail product.
Don't need much per application.
Worked for me within a few weeks.

Cons:
Can smell like creosote.
Makes gray hair darker.
May increase your sensitivity to sunlight.

DENOREX SHAMPOO THERAPEUTIC Review

(More customer reviews)I have used Denorex for years and highly recommend it to those who need a strong dandruff shampoo.It is a coal-tar formula, which some buyers may find objectionable.It has a strong smell to it also, but I like the smell and so does my wife.Mostly, I like the way it works.It keeps my scalp free of itching and flakes and that is what I want in a dandruff shampoo.

Please be aware that this is the "original formula", which is a coal-tar based solution.Denorex also comes in a non-coal tar formulation which I find does not work as well.

Denorex was taken off the market for a time due to health concerns about exposure to coal tar.I found the following on Wikipedia:

"According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer, preparations that include more than 5 percent of crude coal tar are Group 1 carcinogens.

According to the National Psoriasis Foundation and the FDA, coal tar is a valuable, safe and inexpensive treatment option for millions of people with psoriasis and other scalp conditions. [2] Coal tar concentrations between 0.5% and 5% are safe and effective for psoriasis and that no scientific evidence suggests that the coal tar in the concentrations seen in non-prescription treatments is carcinogenic."

How to use:

Apply this medication to your hair and scalp about 2-3 times a week. This medicated shampoo is for use on the scalp and hair only. Do not use if you have open skin (e.g., sores/wounds) on your scalp. Avoid getting any of this shampoo in your eyes - it really stings!. Since the shampoo is brown in color, it has the potential to stain your bath towel if you spill some on it.

SIDE EFFECTS: Minor skin/scalp irritation or darkened/stained skin may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor promptly. Tell your doctor immediately if any of these serious side effects occur: large and/or painful skin sores/pimples on the scalp. An allergic reaction to this product is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include: rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

I have never had a problem using Denorex Coal-Tar Shampoo.That is not to say you will not.It works for me.

(More customer reviews)I have been a sufferer of dandruff ever since I was a child. When I was younger, my head would itch so bad, I would sometimes scratch to the point my scalp would bleed. As I got older, I learned to only wear light colored tops and buy light colored coats and jackets so that my flakes wouldn't be so overt.
One day I went to the doctor for a sinus infection and while I was there I asked him what he recommended for my dandruff - thinking he would write a prescription for radioactive kryptonite or something expensive that would turn my hair green.The doctor said, "Neutrogena T-Gel." I asked, "Is that a prescription?" "No," he replied. I was stunned. I had used Head and Shoulders, Selson Blue and just about everything else on the market - how would this be different. The doctor was persistent and emphasized that T-Gel should work, so I gave it a shot.
This stuff has been a life-saver. It's not very glamorous looking - brown, weird smelling shampoo - but just a dollup the size of a nickel is all I need to lather up my entire head - and I have very thick, curly hair.The longer you let it sit on your scalp, the better - 3 minutes is ideal. Despite the unusual smell from the bottle, your hair just smells fresh and clean.
Unlike other shampoos, I have never had to take a "vacation" and use another shampoo to "liven up" my hair. T-Gel is pretty basic stuff - no perfumes or weird chemicals - the active ingredient, Pine Tar, is a natural secretion of Pine Trees.I have used T-Gel for almost 15 years now and I never have flakes and I probably scratch my head 3 times a year.
Once in a while I will get free shampoo samples in the mail and use other shampoos, but just after 2 hair washings w/o T-Gel, my scalp will start itching again.It seems expensive when you see the price, but one bottle usually lasts me for 3-4 months since you only need a little dab.
When I color my hair, I use a conditioner for colored hair and it doesn't seem to cancel out the effects of T-Gel... and after my hair is dry, I use yet another brand of mousse to style my hair - and still, no itching.
If you have dandruff and haven't tried T-Gel, just give it a try - in one week, you should be symptom free!
